BioPAT® Trace Membranes | EtOH/ MeOH

The BioPAT® Trace Membranes are ready-to-use dialysis and bypass membranes for glucose, lactate, ethanol and methanol applications in the BioPAT® Trace and BioPAT® Multi Trace systems.

Supplied in packs of five, they are easily installed in the corresponding dialysis probe or stainless-steel / PEEK bypass module and are typically replaced after each cultivation.

Variants are available for low and high glucose measuring ranges (approximately 0.1–7 g/L and 1–20 g/L). The glucose/lactate membranes are cellulase-stable, while the ethanol/methanol membranes support reliable online monitoring and control.

All BioPAT® Trace Membranes are absolutely required for proper system functionality.

Overview

Specifications

The BioPAT® Trace dialysis membranes and probes enable controlled diffusion of analytes from the reactor medium (donor solution) into the buffer stream (acceptor), while maintaining a sterile barrier between the process and the measurement system.

Different membrane types are available, including standard dialysis membranes, cellulase‑stable membranes for cultures that release cellulases (primarily microbial cultures), and gas diffusion membranes for samples with volatile components such as methanol and ethanol. The dialysis probe is suitable for all common cultivation types and uses a robust diffusion membrane to ensure high process sterility and reliable substrate separation.

When a probe cannot be installed directly in the vessel due to sterilization requirements or technical limitations, a bypass loop can be used instead. This setup follows the same measurement principle as the dialysis probe, with the membrane contact surface integrated into a flexible tubing line featuring 6 or 9 mm hose‑barb connections.

The standard dialysis membrane is made of cellulose acetate with an approximate molecular weight cut‑off (MWCO) of 12 kDa and is designed for an absolute pressure range of 0.8 to 3.4 bar (11.6 to 49.9 psi).
