BioPAT® Xgas Sensor | 25/75 with DN 40 ISO TC 64
The BioPAT® Xgas sensors are part of the BioPAT® Xgas system and combine one oxygen and one carbon dioxide sensor into a single compact analyzer.
All variants feature a small footprint and a stainless-steel housing (IP65) that connects to standard gas flow path adapters. This allows their use at different maximum gas flow rates, depending on bioreactor size.
The system is mountable and can be integrated into the Sartorius Stedim bioreactor vessel exhaust line using either stainless-steel piping or flexible tubing. Each BioPAT® Xgas sensor is dedicated to a single cultivation vessel, with an adjustable measurement frequency down to every 10 seconds.

The BioPAT® Xgas combines one oxygen and one carbon dioxide sensor with automatic humidity and pressure compensation in a single compact analyzer. The gas to be analyzed flows through the integrated flow adapter past the measuring chambers, where pressure, humidity, oxygen, and carbon dioxide concentrations are measured.
The zirconium dioxide sensor measures oxygen in the range of 1–50 vol% with an accuracy better than 0.2% full scale over the entire measurement range and ±3% of reading. The measurement principle requires a sensor temperature of 580°C (1,076°F). The O₂ sensor operates within specification for up to 15,000 hours (approximately 20 months) with less than 2% drift. A minimum oxygen concentration of 0.1% is required during operation to avoid damage to the electrode cell; exposure to non-oxygen gas mixtures must therefore be avoided.
The dual-wavelength infrared sensor measures carbon dioxide in the range of 0–10 vol% with an accuracy better than 0.2% full scale over the entire measurement range and ±3% of reading. This robust sensor operates within specification for up to 20,000 working hours (approximately 25 months) with less than 2% drift. As a non-standard option, the sensor can be recalibrated to measure higher CO₂ concentrations at reduced accuracy.

As all living cells consume O₂ and produce CO₂, the overall activity of your culture can be understood from its respiration behavior. By combining a Sartorius Stedim Biostat® bioreactor with mass flow controllers and the integrated BioPAT® Xgas, you can accurately measure the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and carbon dioxide production rate (CPR) and automatically calculate the respiratory quotient (RQ) of your process.
These calculations are performed by Biobrain® Supervise, which takes into account dynamic changes in your process conditions. The sensor itself automatically compensates for pressure and humidity, so there is no need for heated exhaust lines.
The BioPAT® Xgas fermenter package provides a powerful process development tool that can shorten your process optimization time by giving a clearer online understanding of your cells’ metabolic activity. Furthermore, with cumulative O₂ uptake or CO₂ production data, automated control loops can be established using Biobrain® Supervise S88 recipes, guiding your process along a tighter operating window and delivering higher consistency.
The high sensitivity of BioPAT® Xgas to small changes in O₂ and CO₂ concentrations also enables early detection of faults in dissolved O₂ probes and supports analysis of CO₂ stripping efficiency.
