The Vero cell line is used for various purposes, most importantly for the production of cell culture-based viral vaccines. Reasons for the extensive use of the Vero cell line are the consistent high viral yields and susceptibility to infect a mutiple range of viruses, as well as relatively easy adaptation for growth in bioreactors on microcarriers, thus allowing up-scaling without loss of cell productivity.
Microcarriers are a support matrix allowing for expansion of adherent cells in the suspension culture. They are offered in both non-sterile autoclavable and sterile gamma-irradiated ready-to-use format to serve both research and manufacturing need. All microcarrier types are manufactured using solid modified polystyrene cores and surfaces are modified with proprietary chemistries to enhance cell attachment and growth performance across multiple adherent cell types.
